Bernice Thompson, 96, of Westbrook formerly of Storden, died April 28, 2004, at Westbrook Good Samaritan Center in Westbrook.

Services were held Tuesday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Storden. Interment was at Westbrook Cemetery in Westbrook.

Bernice M. Learned was born Jan. 4, 1908, to Carl and Katherina (Arfsten) Learned in Des Moines River Township in Murray County. She grew up in the Westbrook area and attended country school before graduating from Westbrook High School in 1926. Bernice attended St. Olaf Lutheran Church south of Walnut Grove, where she was confirmed.

In 1926, Bernice married Emil Thorsness in Slayton. She was a homemaker, raising their three children, Donna, John and Leo.

After Emil's death in 1959, Bernice moved to Minneapolis.
She was employed a number of years as a housekeeper at LSS, a home for unwed mothers. She also worked as a housemother at a children's school for the deaf in eastern Minnesota as well as a college in Mankato. She also cooked for a University of Minnesota sorority.

In 1975, Bernice married Gerald Thompson in Jeffers. Gerald died in 1998, and Bernice moved near her daughter in Hood River, Ore. She moved to Westbrook Good Samaritan Center in 2001.

Bernice enjoyed telephone conversations, baking cinnamon rolls and traveling.

She was a longtime member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Storden, where she was president of the Ladies Aid in 1956 and a Sunday School teacher for four years.

In addition to her husbands, Bernice was preceded in death by a son, John Thorsness; a grandson, Ryley Sherman; two brothers, Albert and Richard Learned; and a sister, Hazel Hansen.

Survivors include her daughter, Donna Martinson of Hood River, Ore.; a son, Leo (Gaylee) Thorsness of Saddlebrook, Ark.; a daughter-in-law, Marlene Thorsness of Durango, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
