Anthony J. Gattuso Sr., 76, of 116 Union St., a longtime barber, bandleader and former Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra sideman, died yesterday in North Adams Regional Hospital.

Born in New York City, he came to North Adams as a child and was graduated from Drury High School.

He apprenticed as a barber with the late O. James Trozzi, and soon established his own barbershop, which he operated for more than 50 years at several North Adams locations.

He played the saxophone, piano and guitar, and was a member of the Drury High School Band when it played for President Herbert Hoover at a White House concert in the early 1930s.

He played for a short time with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra in New York City. He then formed the Tony Gattuso and the Midnight Ramblers Band, playing throughout Massachusetts, New York and Vermont.

He was a past secretary and treasurer of Fraternal Order of Eagles 310, and was also the club pianist. He was a past secretary of the North Adams Barbers Union Local. He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, the former Marie Louise Lefebvre; two sons, Gary A. of Adams and Anthony J. Jr. of North Adams; a daughter, Barbara Serre of North Adams; a brother, James A. of Boston; a sister, Cecelia Daldoss of North Adams, and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be tomorrow morning at Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals and in St. Anthony's Church, with burial in Southview Cemetery.
