Following graduation from Iowa, George took employment as an engineer with the General Electric Company in Schenectady, NY. An ROTC graduate, he was called to active duty in 1940 (US Army Artillery). Arrived in Normandy at DDay plus 12, served in France and Germany until war's end.
He returned to General Electric's Chicago facilities after the war, but semi-retired in the 1970s to become an adjunct professor at the University of Arizona. He finally retired for good to Seattle, Washington, where he spent his final days. His beloved wife of 51 years was Elizabeth Jean Akins.
