Carlyle is the daughter of Moses Wilkerson Sellers (b.1796,N.C.), founder of Sellersburg, IN, and Margaret Littell (b.1817,P.A.).
The 1850 US Census lists the 11 year-old "Carlisle" and two older siblings living at home with their parents in Silver Creek Twp, Clark Co, IN.

On November 5, 1857, Carlyle married Robert J. Gillaspy, (b.1837,IN) a native of Uniontown, Jackson Co, IN, which is 30 miles north of Sellersburg. Both Carlyle's and Robert's fathers were ordained Baptist ministers within the Baptist Brownstown Association, which covered the Counties of Jackson, Jennings, Clark and Washington; and so, it is possible that the fathers facilitated introductions between Carlyle and Robert.

On September 9, 1858, Carlyle gave birth to Margaret C. Gillaspy in Sellersburg. 22 months later, the 1860 US Census lists Robert, Carlyle and Margaret living next door to Robert's parents, Rev. William and Rachel Gillaspy, in Vernon Twp, Jackson Co, IN.

On July 16, 1861, Carlyle gave birth to a second daughter, Sally C; but then Carlyle died 1m 5d later, leaving Robert with two small children to care for. The following week, Robert enlisted in the Union Army to fight in the Civil War. Evidence suggests he may have left Margaret and Sally in the care of his older sister, Cynthia A. Gillaspy-Hougland.

Sadly, little Sally C. died at 9m 27d, and is buried next to Carlyle in Sellersburg Cemetery. Margaret, on the other hand, married and had 10 children, and died from natural causes in Louisville, KY in 1914. She is buried in Uniontown Cemetery, Jackson Co, IN, near her Aunt Cynthia A. Hougland.
