Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served in the Civil War first as 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant of the 1st Nebraska Volunteer Cavalry. He later was transferred to the 1st Alabama (Union) Volunteer Cavalry regiment (made up of Unionist Alabamans), where he rose to the rank of Major. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for “gallant and meritorious services during the war”.
