Oliver and Margaret Melinda Caperton married on August 2, 1831. Their children include John, Andrew, Nancy (married first Samuel B. Parkman, killed at Antietam, second Emil von Ahlefeldt) and Alice.

From 1837 to 1847, Oliver Beirne and John Burnside were partners in a New Orleans, LA mercantile business. Beirne retired from the business in 1847, and moved to Sweet Springs, WV.

In Sweet Springs, Oliver owned the Old Sweet Springs resort, and served as the town postmaster

John Burnside died in 1881. An article published in the Greenbrier Independent (Lewisburg, WV) on April 30, 1920 suggests Burnside left his entire estate to Oliver Beirne. ( It was also suggested Beirne later passed the properties to his son-in-law, William Porcher Miles. No source was provided for that suggestioin.) Other sources related to John Burnside state Burnside's will left bequests to several New Orleans estabilshements, including the Seaman's Home, six New Orleans orphanages and Charity Hospital.
