My Grandmother - was widowed just before her 42nd birthday - with 5 of her 6 children still to raise. My grandfather died the day before my Uncle Ned's 18th birthday.

Nellie always remained interested in social issues and politics. She was never without the daily newspaper and her Time magazine. In my childhood, when "Gabriel Heatter And The News" came on the radio - there was no talking until the program was completed.

"Mr. Heatter began his evening radio newscasts with these words, 'Ah, there's good news tonight' trying to give hope when the news was grim during World War II."

Folger's Coffee was an advertising sponsor. Their famous slogan, "When I say Coffee, I mean Folger's" - was used by Gabriel at each broadcast.

Gabriel Heatter ~ 1940's radio newscaster

During this era, my grandmother looked forward to her weekly Saturday Evening Post, which she read from cover to cover. She created a scrapbook of the "Hazel" cartoons published in the "Post." I now have her Hazel scrapbook in my possession.

The children's weekly illustration and behavior lesson in the magazine "This Watchbird is Watching You" was my treat and a reminder of proper conduct. "The Watchbirds flip the concept of bird-watching onto any potential childhood naughtiness."

I spent much quality time with my grandmother. We played checkers and many card games. Grandmom wouldn't "let" me win, like my mother would. I had to be clever enough to do it on my own or the score was in her favor!

Each time I plant my Wax Leaf Begonias, I think of the ones my grandmother kept in her little living room.

She was my great companion and advocate.

Nellie's middle name was chosen to honor her maternal grandmother: Amanda Melvina Preston Wingate.

Edwin & Nellie married on April 9, 1905
