Herbert Basil Chittum, a member of the Rockbridge County Board of Supervisors for 19 years and past board chairman, died at his home here Tuesday of an apparent heart attack.
Chittum, 54 had represented the Kerrs Creek Magisterial District since the county was redistricted in 1967. He represented Buffalo District for 15 years before the redistricting.
Owner and operator of the Chittum Insurance Agency, Lexington Chittum was serving his fifth term on the board. A political independent, he was first elected in November, 1951, and subsequently re-elect for four more terms. Chittum, respected and well liked by fellow board members for his views on fiscal responsibility in county matters, had attended, the Monday meeting of the supervisors. Most recalled. Tuesday that he had seemed to be in good spirits at the meeting. As a supervisor, one of Chittum's chief concerns was the necessity of planning for future county needs and development. He was former chairman and member of the Rockbridge. County Planning Commission and served as one of the county's representatives, on the Rockbridge Area Regional Planning Commission. He was former president of the Effinger Ruritan Club and was a member of the Mount City Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Mahoney Chittum; a daughter, Mrs. Howard C. Lucas, Salem; a son, Herbert B. Chittum, Jr., Mechanicsville; his mother, Mrs. Ella Knick Chittum, Lexington; two sisters, Mrs. Allene C. Newman, Roanoke, Mrs. Ernestine C. Hotinger, a brother, Charles C. Chittum, Roanoke.
The funeral will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at Harrison's Funeral Chapel, Lexington, with burial in Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery, Lexington.
