Harold Leon Smiley, 45, an employee of the Bridgewater Furniture Factory and a former member of the Mt. Crawford Town Council, died at Rockingham Memorial Hospital early Monday morning. Mr. Smiley, who suffered from a severe stomach ulcer, became ill at his home Wednesday night and was admitted to the hospital Thursday.

He had worked for Bridgewater Furniture 10 years, and before that was employed by Duplan Corp. at Grottoes and Sam's Supermarket in Harrisonburg. He was a member of the Mt. Crawford Ruritan Club and a member of the official board of Mt. Crawford United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the church's Johnson Memorial Sunday School Class and the Men of the Church.

Mr. Smiley was born March 1, 1924 at Mt. Crawford and was a son of Mrs. Vergie Smiley, now of Bridgewater, and the late Charlie Letcher Smiley.

Surviving, in addition to his mother, are three sisters, Mrs. Lester Simmons of Springhill, Mrs. Carson Elza of Baltimore, Md. and Mrs. Robert Simpson of Bridgewater, and a brother, Charlie O. Smiley of Madison, Wis.

The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Crawford United Methodist Church by the Rev. Charles H. Corner. Burial will be in Mt. Crawford Cemetery, VA.The body is at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home, where the family will Honorary attendants will include members of the Mt. Crawford Ruritan Club, Bridgewater Furniture employees and the Men's Club of Mt. Crawford United Methodist Church.
