Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. Served in the Civil War first as Major of the 1st New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 13th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on December 8, 1864. Elected to represent New Hampshire's 2nd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1867 to 1871.
