Civil War Union Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was the commander of a brigade of Tennessee Union soldiers. In March, 1862, he was appointed Brigadier General of the 1st East Tennessee Brigade and was part of the Union garrison at Cumberland Gap. In 1863, Spears' authority was increased to include the organization of all Union Tennessee men into units. He led his divisions in actions across Kentucky and Tennessee for the entire war.
