Civil War Union Brevet Major General. He was admitted to the bar in 1840, commenced law practice in Huntington, Indiana and served two terms in the State Senate. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was commissioned Colonel of the 47th Indiana Infantry and commanded a brigade at New Madrid. He participated in the White River expedition, the Battle at Yazoo Pass, the Vicksburg campaign and the Red River expedition. He was present in the campaign against Mobile, Alabama, was promoted Brigadier General in November, 1864 and spent the remainder of the war in the Department of the Gulf. For his war service, he was brevetted a Major General on March 13, 1865. After the war, he resumed legal practice and was the judge of the Twenty-eighth Judicial Circuit Court, Indiana.
