Civil War Union Army Brigadier General. Born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, he was a politician and served in the Army during the Mexican War. In May 1861, he joined the Union Army, and was appointed Captain in the Pennsylvania Volunteer Light Artillery, later becoming a Lieutenant Colonel of the 1st Pennsylvania Volunteer Artillery. In September 1861, he was made Colonel of the 57th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and fought at Seven Pines and Fredericksburg, where he was wounded. In November 1862, he was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers and commanded a district in Wisconsin. After the Civil War, he was an Inspector of Indian Agencies, then a Stage Line Operator, and a hotel operator. He died in Scotland, Bon Homme County, South Dakota.
