Civil War Union Brevet Major General. Prior to the Civil War, he graduated from West Point as an Engineer Officer in 1829 and served on frontier duty until he resigned in the 1830s. When the Civil War began in 1861, he enlisted and was appointed Colonel in command of the 16th New York Infantry. He fought at the First Bull Run and was promoted Brigadier General in March 1862. After siege of Corinth, Mississippi, he was placed in command of the defenses of Washington DC, in early 1863. From 1864 until the end of the war, he commanded the Union Militia districts in Kentucky, Missouri and Kansas. For services to the Union, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on July 11 1865. After the war he served as the New York City Civil Engineer and was the author of several engineering related books.
