Descendant of Cpl. Richard Stairs (1760-1827) & Eve Barclay (1760-1840).


Private, Canadian Army # 742642 - Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. Enlisted January 26, 1916 in the 115TH Battalion. Sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia on July 23, 1916 aboard the S.S. Olympic, arrived in England on July 31, 1916. Transferred to the 112TH Battalion for training then posted to the 26TH Battalion with which he shipped to France on April 20, 1917. Joined his fighting unit on May 5, 1917.


Roy Stairs was killed in action on Wednesday, August 15, 1917 during the battle for Hill 70 at Lens, Pas-de-Calais. His body was never recovered. He is recorded on the Vimy War Memorial in Vimy, Pas-de-Calais. In 2018 the new Hill 70 Memorial at Lens honors all those who fought in that battle. Roy has a memorial marker with his parents at the Otis Cemetery, Lower Southampton, New Brunswick, Canada.
