Charles was the son of Charles Butler Alexander Sr. and Margaret Sterrett Moss. Charles married Anita Maria-Louise Carroll in October of 1935 in Green Spring Valley, Maryland. Anita was the daughter of Anita Hack and Charles Bancroft Carroll Jr. Her maternal grandparents were Frederick Home Hack and Nannie Newcomer.

Anita was born on 10 July 1916, in Ellicott City, Maryland and died in 2009 in Owings Mills, Maryland. She was educated in Paris. After Charles died Anita married William O. Irvine Jr. in 1950. They divorced in October of 1965 in Dade County, Florida. Anita and William had one child, Kathleen.

Charles was a civilian in the United States Army during World War II. He entered the service from Maryland. When Charles first went abroad he was attached to the British Army in Italy. Later he was attached to the French 1st Army. He had a narrow escape when his ambulance was riddled by shrapnel.

Charles was injured by gun fire and found dead in a Nazi hospital by French liberating forces. For his service he was awarded the Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre.

A headstone for Charles is in the Saint Thomas Episcopal Church Cemetery, Owings Mills, Baltimore County, Maryland.
