Military Medal recipient. Barnard was born and educated at Geelong and was working as a carpenter at Essendon in Melbourne when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces on February 5, 1916. He was posted to the 7th Australian Infantry Battalion and embarked aboard HMAT A14 Euripides on April 4, 1916. He was taken on strength of his battalion in France on August 22. During the Battle of Broodseinde in Belgium on October 4-5, 1917 he displayed fine initiative and courage in assisting his commanding officer to reorganise for attack on the 3rd objective. On capture of the objective he was conspicuous for his leadership and control of his men in organisation and in consolidation of the company's front. He was awarded the Military Medal and on October 6 was appointed Lance Corporal. He was killed in action during the Battle of Amiens on August 9, 1918.
