Joseph served as a Staff Sergeant & Ball Turret Gunner on B-17F #42-3437, 339th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Elk County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 15, 1942 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-3437 took off from Station 138, Snetterton Heath, England on a bombing mission targeting the Hispano-Suisa complex near Paris, France. Over their target they were hit by enemy ground anti-aircraft flak and exploded. They crashed near Paris during the war.

Joseph was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

He was first interred in the New Cemetery at Virofly, Paris and was later interred here.

He was serving as the navigator on a B-17F which took off from Snetterton Heath assigned to target the Hispano-Suisa complex near Paris. Hit by flak on the bomb run and exploded. 9 KIA 1 evaded capture.

All nine KIA were interred in New Cemetery at Virofly, Paris.
