Technician 4th Grade Alfred Gottschalk Mortensen, born in Denmark in 1910, was the son of Poul Thorvald and Anna Ingeborg Christiane Nielsine (Gottschalk) Mortensen from Denmark.

Alfred arrived in New York for the first time in 1922. His father had passed away in 1917. Alfred worked as part of the ship’s company as a dishwasher on the steam ship “Oscar II” making many trips between Copenhagen and New York.

Alfred married Ann G Swanson sometime prior to 1927. The 1927 New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York, city directory lists Mortensen, Alf and Annie at 249 Weyman Ave.

Alfred became a citizen with his US Naturalization papers dated 28 Jul 1942 in Brooklyn, New York.

Alfred enlisted 8 Oct 1942 at Fort Jay, Governors Island, New York. He’d had two years of high school, worked as a waiter, and was married.

The 861st EAB was activated Jan 1943, although it had been trained since Oct 1942 as 1st Battalion of the 924th Regiment. This unit arrived in England May 1943 and proceeded to replace hundreds of acres of apple orchards with a heavy-bomber field by Feb 1944. Since then it has been engaged in maintenance of 8th A.F. fields.
The NARA WWII Casualty Lists By State and County show Mortensen, Alfred G, Tec 4 from Queens County, New York as DNB (Died Non-Battle) 17 Aug 1945 so he died in the line of duty from some illness or accident some 101 days after the end of hostilities on VE Day May 8th.
