Son of the Rev. Robert Bamford (1854-1898) and Blanche Edith Bamford (née Porter) (1856-1936) of Lynton House (now Abbot's Litten), Long Street, Sherborne, Dorset.
After the Rev. Bamford's death Blanche married the Rev. Thomas Myers and lived at 89, Bloomfield Avenue, Bath, later moving to Ditchling, East Sussex.
His siblings were Robert Bamford (1883-1942),
Edward Bamford VC (1887-1928) and
Rachel Bamford (1885-).
He was educated at Sherborne Preparatory School, and then as a day boy at Sherborne School (1903-1905). He went to Australia and in 1913 was described as a professional musician. During the First World War he served as a Private in the Grenadier Guards.
