Captain Alastair FitzHugh Maclean, 33rd Punjabis, Indian Army. He was the son of Major General Charles Smith Maclean, CB, CIE, Indian Staff Corps (1836-1921), and Margaret MacQueen Maclean (nee Bairnsfather; 1846-1921). Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Indian Army (unattached list) as a 2nd Lieutenant on 8 May 1901. He spent his probationary year with a British Regiment in India. He joined the 33rd Punjabis on 19 Nov 1902. Promoted to Lieutenant on 11 Apr 1904 and to Captain on 8 May 1910. The Regiment was stationed at Bannu, North West Frontier Province, India when WW1 started. They were mobilised and sent to Egypt to guard the Suez Canal, arriving in Suez on 19 Nov 1914. When they left Egypt in Aug 1915 to fight on the Western Front in France, Captain MacLean was attached to the 14th Sikhs and deployed with them from Egypt to Gallipoli where he was killed in action on 8 Aug 1915 after the landing at Suvla. He was mentioned in Despatches on 19 Mar 1917. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Çanakkale, Turkey.

He is also commemorated on the Indian Army WW1 Memorial in the Royal Memorial Chapel, RMA Sandhurst, Camberley, Surrey Heath Borough, Surrey, England.
