Alvin is the son of Alvin Stanley, Sr. and Mary Louise (Armstrong) Gaskill. Alvin married Gertrude A. Glanding. They had three sons: Ron, Ralph Stanley, and Richard Walter. Alvin owned a TV repair shop in Atlantic City, owned an appliance service shop, and was a teacher at the Vocational School in Atlantic County. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. Alvin was very active in the Masonic Lodge, the United Methodist Church in Ventnor, and bowled on several bowling leagues. In his youth he played on a semi-professional ice hockey league. Alvin, also, liked to play golf.
