1st Lt. Robert N. Bennedsen, 25, of Vashon, Wash., died July 18 at Qalat, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany. He graduated from Seattle University, with a bachelor's degree in 2008. While at Seattle University he enrolled in the Reserve Officer Training Corps. In 2008, he helped run the summer ROTC program at Fort Lewis. Lt. Bennedsen is survived by his parents, Tracy and Scott Bennedsen, of Vashon Island and sister Jamie Bennedsen, of Tacoma.
