Investor, civic leader. Liberty Holden owned a farm called "Silverthorn" east of the city, which he sold to provide land for the relocation of both Western Reserve College and the fledgeling Case School of Applied Science. He invested in the Lake Superior Iron Ore and Utah Silver Company, using profits to purchase the The Cleveland Plain Dealer and build it to become a major city newspaper that still publishes today. As a civic leader, he helped to organize and found some of Cleveland's most cherished institutions, including the Western Reserve Historical Society and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
