Robert Ralph Ivers, M.D., entered new life on July 19, 2006, at his home in Fargo, N.D.

Bob was born March 4, 1930, in Christine, ND, the son of Ralph M. and Olive T. (Pederson) Ivers of Fargo. He grew up in Fargo, was confirmed at First Lutheran Church and graduated from Central High School in 1947. He married Barbara Jane Mattson of Fargo in June, 1950. He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and later graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN in 1952.

He attended University of North Dakota, School of Medicine, Grand Forks, ND, and then Northwestern School of Medicine, Chicago, IL, in 1955, followed by an internship at St. Luke's Hospital, Fargo. Upon completion of his internship he enjoyed a general medicine private practice in Pelican Rapids, MN, before deciding to pursue a Neurology Residency at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, and returned to Fargo upon completion to join The Neuropsychiatric Institute in 1961 as the first neurologist in the state of North Dakota.

He was an active member of the Medical Staff of St. Luke's, a Courtesy staff member at St. Ansgar Hospital, Moorhead, MN, St. John's Hospital and Dakota Hospital, Fargo, as well as a Consulting Staff member of the North Dakota State Hospital, Jamestown, ND. He was a Clinical Professor of Neurology at UND Medical School, Grand Forks, ND, a former President of the First District Medical Society, a former Chair of the North Dakota Developmental Disabilities Council, Chair of the Impaired Physician's Committee of North Dakota and served as the Chairman of the Board of the former Lutheran Health Systems, as well as a former member of the Board of Governors for The Neuropsychiatric Institute.

Memberships included the American Medical Association, the American Association for the Study of Headache, and a Fellow in the American Academy of Neurology. He was once interviewed for an episode of NOVA on Prairie Public Television for a diagnosis he had made of arsenic poisoning in a Minnesota community.

He was often seen riding his bike on Fargo streets between spring and fall. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed skiing, traveling, eating foods of all kinds and varieties, reading, and loved the company of family and friends including his long, personal association with the friends of Bill W.

In December, 1976, he married Mary Grimes Kalvik, who survives him along with his six children, Lauryl S. Ivers (Richard) Stockness, Ellsworth, WI, Dana R. (Barbara) Ivers, Des Moines, IA, Ronda J. Ivers, Valley City, ND, Anna Lynn Ivers (Richard) Gunderson, Fargo, Craig H. (Jennifer) Ivers, Fargo, Victor L. Ivers, Fargo.

He also had two step-children, Paul B. Kalvik and Deborah M. Kalvik Nichols, both of Fargo. He adored his 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his brother, Martin T. (Patricia) Ivers, Nordland, WA, and two sisters, Lois Ivers (Bernard) Altenburg, Fargo, and Joyce Ivers (Dennis) Bush, Wanham, Alberta, Canada, along with his step-mother, Melva Ivers, Chaska, MN, two step-brothers, James (Cheryl) Sulerud, Chaska, MN, and Peder (Mary) Sulerud, Silver Spring, MD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jon Ivers, daughter Andrea Ivers, grandson Jacob Gunderson.

Bob Ivers touched the lives of countless individuals across the globe during his lifetime through his loving and compassionate nature. Through the 15 years of his illness, he never ceased to inspire others with his optimism and positive example.
