James Harvey Kitchell was the son of John Kitchell (1766-1812) and Anna Nancy (Kitchell) Kitchell (1771-1838). (His parents were second cousins.) His family moved from New Jersey and settled for a time around Cincinnati, OH where his father died in 1813. James, his brother Asa, sisters Electa and Elizabeth 'Betsy', and their widowed mother Anna Nancy Kitchell came to Crawford County, Illinois about 1817 along with Anna's brother Joseph Kitchell and family; Joseph laid out the plat of Palestine, Illinois in 1818 with Edward Cullom. On 14 Aug 1821 in Palestine, Illinois, James Harvey Kitchell married Nancy Gill. To this union were born 9 children: James Alvin Kitchell, Emeline A Kitchell who married Edmund C Haskett, Julia A Kitchell who married Judge James C. Allen, Mary Jane Kitchell who never married, Martha Kitchell who never married, John Kitchell, Hannah Kitchell who married Dr. Nathaniel Steele, Caroline Kitchell who died at 3, and Clara "Fannie" Kitchell who died at 7. James Harvey Kitchell was a merchant in Palestine with a partnership in Ireland & Kitchell general store.

By June 2011, the stone has been broken by vandals and is lying on the ground in two pieces in front of the stub base.
