Enlisted 13 August 1862 at Port Huron, St. Clair County, Michigan; he was residing at Kenockee Township, St. Clair County, Michigan prior to his enlistment at 38 years of age; mustered in on 14 August 1862, Company C, Michigan 22nd Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private; captured and imprisoned on 20 September 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga, Walker County, Georgia; mustered out on 25 June 1864 dying of disease (Chronic Diarrhea as a POW at the Andersonville Prison, Macon County, Georgia.
Patrick's brother is buried in Mt Elliot Cemetery, Detroit. He also was in the Civil War and was part of the group that tried to over throw Canada. He is Col John Atkinson.
