Simmons McIntosh was born in 1784 in Liberty County, Georgia, to famous Revolutionary War hero, John McIntosh and Sarah Swinton, and grandson of Col. William McIntosh, Revolutionary War hero. He entered the US Army in 1812, was severely wounded in the affair near Black Rock 1814. Served throughout the Creek War. He was commissioned Captain in 1817, Major in 1836 and Lieutenant-Colonel in 1839. During the Mexican War he participated in the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Pahna where he was dangerously wounded and was subsequently brevetted Colonel. He commanded a brigade in the Valley of Mexico and was mortally wounded at the head of his column in the assault on Molino del Rey September 8, 1847. His remains were returned to Savannah, Georgia, where his funeral was held March 18, 1848. He was buried in Colonial Park Cemetery in the vault with his great uncle General Lachlan McIntosh of Revolutionary War fame.
