Born Spring Grove Estate, Franklin Co., NC, son of Col. John Davis Hawkins and Jane Anderson Boyd, husband of Ariella A. Alston of NC. He established his plantation of 3074 acres on lower Caney Creek (area became Hawkinsville) for cotton, then grew sugar cane and produced sugar for the South during the war of Northern Aggression. Subsequently,the plantation was expanded to over 40,000 acres producing beef cattle. The Hawkins family moved into a new home on Lake Austin (Matagorda Co.).
