Admitted to the Bar 1813, practicing in Albany NY; 1816 was the acknowledged leader of the Otsego County bar; settled in Coopertown NY; 1820 returned to his native Columbia Co and practiced in Hudson where he practiced until 1838; spring of 1838 moved to NYC and practiced there until spring of 1860; Attorney General of the State of New York; one term NY state senator; member of convention to revise the Constitute of NY State; 1815 lieutenant in Coopertown's militia.Politician

Lead defense counsel in the Anti-Rent War trial; got into fist fight with the prosecutor /AG John Van Buren, son of Martin Van Buren.

Defeated John Van Buren in 1847 and was first New York State Attorney General elected on popular ballot.

Also lost to Silas Wright in 1837 for US Senator. Served in the NY State Senate 1826-29.
