Merritt D. Parsons, 69, former superintendent of schools in Pleasant Valley, of 2707 Olympia Drive, Bettendorf, died Saturday, August 20, 1994 at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport.

Services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 23, 1994 at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial was in National Cemetery, Rock Island, Arsenal.

Merritt became superintendent of Pleasant Valley Schools in 1977, retiring in 1990. He coached and taught at Ankeny High School from 1948-52, Spirit Lake High School from 1952-55 and Bettendorf High School from 1955-76.

He married Dorothy Winery in 1952 in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

He received a bachelor of arts degree from Iowa State Teachers College. He did graduate work at the University of Iowa and Western Illinois University. He received a master's degree from Northeast Missouri State University.

He was a member of the Bettendorf Rotary Club, Hamilton Masonic Lodge, Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce, and the Trailblazers. He was president of the Iowa Association of School Administrators Board of Directors from 1982-83, member of the Advisory Board Association of School Administrators, First in the Nation in Education Advisory Board from 1985-86 and Iowa Department of Education Advisory Council.

During his career, the Pleasant Valley School District was recognized as distinguished for Educational Excellence by the State Department of Education. Three of the district's schools received National Excellence in Education Awards: Pleasant Valley High School in 1984, Cody Elementary School in 1986 and Pleasant View in 1988.

He was coach of the year in 1960. He received the Arnold Salisbury Award for Outstanding Leadership in Education in 1984. He was Iowa Superintendent of the Year in 1989. He was a member of the Advisory Council of Iowa First in the Nation in Education school recognition program, Scott County Teachers Recognition Advisory Committee and Western Illinois University Education Administration Advisory Committee. He was a delegate to the American Association of School Administrators Delegate Assembly from 1983-85.

He was chairman of the Area IX Education Agency from 1987-89. He was Iowa Association of School Administrators Liaison to Iowa Athletic Directors Association from 1985-86. He was presenter to the Iowa Legislature on School Finance Reform in 1989. He was a member of the American Association of School Administrators from 1966-90.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Connie (Mrs. Richard) Horst, Bettendorf; and Lori (Mrs. Earl) McNamara, Zumbrota, Minn.; a son, Dean, Bettendorf; six grandchildren; and a brother, Jack, Wapello, Iowa.
