Renowned Baptist preacher for nearly 70 years. Professor of belle lettres in the literary department at Mercer University.

Shaler Granby Hillyer was the son of Shaler Hillyer of Granby, Connecticut, and Rebecca Freeman, of Wilkes County, Georgia. They had children Junius Hillyer, John F. Hillyer, Shaler Granby Hillyer, and another son and daughter who died young. Shaler's father died 12 March 1820, and his mother died 11 June 1843.

Shaler G. Hillyer was ordained to the Baptist ministry on 16 August 1835. The following year he became pastor of Cabin Creek Church in Jackson County, Georgia. To help support himself, he also became an educator.

On 1 December 1836, Shaler married Elizabeth Jane Thompson in Liberty County, Georgia. They settled first in Athens, where Shaler was principal of the Male Academy and pastor of the Baptist church there. In 1838, he became pastor in Milledgeville and stayed there for six years; during this period, he was also principal of Scottsboro Female College. Then in 1844 he was elected principal of the Female School at Penfield, but unfortunately his wife died about then, and he stayed there only a year. In 1845, he was elected to the "chair of rhetoric" at Mercer University, where he became famous for his fine speaking. There he also married as his second wife Elizabeth Dagg, daughter of Dr. J. L. Dagg, president of the university.
