SWANTON - The Rev. Ellis L. "Buss" Harvey, 77, of Bittinger Road, Swanton, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at his home.
Born June 15, 1921, in Vindex, he was the son of the late Arthur S. and Jessie M. (Lambert) Harvey. He was also preceded in death by one son, Richard W. Harvey, in January 1998.
He served as a pastor with the Evangelical United Brethren/United Methodist Church from 1967 to 1984 and as an associate pastor until 1994. During his ministry, he served the Terra Alta, Deep Creek Lake, Kitzmillter/Mount Bethel, Albright, Keyser/Calvary, Grantsville and Gormania charges.
He attended the Garrett Community College and the Wesleyan Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C. In his early years, he was a coal miner, served as postmaster at the Swanton post office for 22 years and was an assistant scoutmaster for 15 years.
He was an army veteran of World War II and received two purple hearts. He was a member of the American Legion, Accident.
He is survived by his wife, Mary June (Custer) Harvey; one daughter, Sandra K. Schofield and husband, Brian, Bittinger; one daughter-in-law, Betty (Laub) Harvey, New Martinsville, W.Va.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. Services will be held at the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church on Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Charles Teets and the Rev. Meredith Ball officiating.
Interment will be in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans organizations in southern Garrett County.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 126, Swanton, MD 21561; or to the Southern Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 378, Oakland, MD 21550.
