Hazel Edna Smith, the daughter of Frank and Effie (Deskin) Hazen, was born December 14, 1911 in Pawnee, Missouri. She died Saturday, May 17, 2003 at the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center in Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 91 years, 5 months and 4 days.
Hazel was raised and lived in Missouri until her marriage to Lawrence Smith on August 30, 1930 in Leon, Iowa. They moved to the Red Oak Community in 1949. She enjoyed being a homemaker and tending to her collection of trinkets. She enjoyed baby sitting several children in the community. Hazel became a resident of the Red Oak Rehab and Care Center in 1992. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lawrence on August 2, 1974; 5 brothers; one sister; and one son David.
Hazel is survived by two sons, George "Pete" Smith and his wife Rose Marie of Red Oak, Iowa, and Jack Smith and his wife Eva of Georgia; two sisters, Doris Reed of Davis City, Iowa and Alberta Gilmore of Kansas City, Missouri; 12 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
