GRUETLI-LAAGER, TN — Avis L. Meeks, 92, died Saturday January 2, 2010.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Altamont, TN. She was very active within the church and had went on a mission at Washington D.C. Temple.

She was born on July 8, 1917, to Lyman Beecher and Flossie Tipton Smartt who preceded her in death along with her grandparents, Reuben and Sarah Jane Nunley Smartt, John Houston and Mary Belle Nunley Tipton Jr.; husband, William Thomas "Petey" Meeks; brothers, William Taft, Reed Smoot and Philander Knox Smartt Sr.; sisters, Ora Lee Smartt Rankin, Geneva Belle Smartt Watts, Jessie Inez Smartt Turnage and Juanita Ruth Smartt; grandsons, Ricky Allan Meeks and Leland Wade Dodson; grandson-in-law, Stanley E. Herrod; and stepgreat-great-granddaughter, Daysia Lee Neal.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Regena Smartt Dodson Stem; son, Cecil Thomas "Tommy" and Mary Braden Meeks; sister, Eva Burl Russell; grandchildren, Regena Dodson Herrod, Barton (Jan) and Brian (Shirley) Dodson, Bobby and Christy Meeks; 15 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are noon CST today at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Altamont with Bishop Aaron Barrett and Tre Pennington officiating.

Burial to follow in Northcutts Cove LDS Mormon Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 10 a.m. CST until service time at the Mormon Church.
