Georgiana was the daughter of US Army surgeon Charles McDougall and his wife Maria Hanson. She was born at Ft. Winnebago in what is now Wisconsin. She met her husband, John Adams, a new West Point graduate when he and her father were both posted to Ft. Snelling. She followed John and the army to the desert of New Mexico at Ft. Craig, to Baltimore, then California. When Tennessee seceded and John resigned his commission, Georgiana followed him back to the South where she had her 6th child in Alabama. John was one of 6 confederate generals killed at the Battle of Franklin in 1864. Georgiana moved back to St. Louis to live with her parents and to raise her children
