Politician and Jewish Leader. Born in Bavaria, Germany, Herman Nathan Myers became the first Jewish mayor of his adopted hometown of Savannah, Georgia. He is thought by many to be Savannah's most outstanding mayor and is admired as one of the first Jewish elected officials in the United States. He is a role model among American Jews. Under his administration, both City Hall and Union [Train] Station were built, and the public library system was started. His more than ten years as mayor were preceded by an illustrious career as a banker, business leader, and railroad man. His funeral was one of the biggest ever in Savannah, beginning with lying in state at City Hall, a religious service at Temple Mickve Israel (the third oldest synagogue in the U. S.), and burial at Bonaventure Cemetery.
