Under his administration, both City Hall and Union [Train] Station were built, and the public library system was started. His more than ten years as mayor were preceded by an illustrious career as a banker, business leader, and railroad man. His funeral was one of the biggest ever in Savannah, beginning with lying in state at City Hall, a religious service at Temple Mickve Israel (the third oldest synagogue in the U. S.), and burial at Bonaventure Cemetery.
