There are two more gravesites in the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Pomona that pre-date 1910 that we will look at before moving to another interesting location in the community. One lengthy but interesting story will be covered in today's article.
The Chronicle of October 7, 1903, gave the most interesting sketch of the life of Edwin John Godfrey, as follows, “The subject of this sketch, who died at Pomona, TN, Sunday, Sept. 27, 1903, was born in London, England, Feb. 23, 1845, but came to the United States with his parents at the age of seven and settled in Brooklyn, N.Y., where they remained for several years.
"When the Civil War came he tried to enlist in the Union army, but was under the required age and not very rugged and was refused enlistment. Later he entered the service in the Navy and served on the seas for three years; serving on the Wyandotte, Butan, North Carolina and Tahoma, from which latter ship he was honorably discharged in August 1867.
"In 1871, he was married near Warsaw, Ontario, to Miss Kate Hill, daughter of Capt. George Arundel Hill of the English army, and Hannah Cox Hill. Kate was born September 10, 1839 in Toronto, Canada, and died January 19, 1914, in Pomona.
"They settled in New York and lived in and near that city for five years, then removed to Lindsay, Ontario, for a short stay, and thence to Bowesmont, Pembina, county, North Dakota, and after three years, in 1884, moved to Pomona, TN, where he ever after made his home.
"Three children were born to them, Edwin A., who died in Dakota at the age of six years; George B., now pursuing a medical course in St. Louis; and Miss Kate E. Godfrey, of Chattanooga. He leaves beside his wife and children, a brother and sister who live in New York.
"Mr. Godfrey's health began to fail about two years ago, although it was not specially noticeable until July 1902, since which time it has steadily declined. For a time he was under medical treatment in Chattanooga, but came back to Pomona in May last and has not been able to be out from home since and for several weeks was confined to his bed. His son and daughter were summoned and had the sad privilege of helping care for him for the last few hours."Mr. Godfrey was a public spirited citizen, always interested in everything helpful to the community, active in business, a deacon of the Congregational Church, Pomona, a Christian worker who studied to be approved unto God, and was a workman needing not to be ashamed. He was never a politician, but always a citizen who watched, worked and voted from high moral principle. The world is better for his influence, and lonelier for his leaving it. The funeral was held from the Pomona church, on Monday, Sept. 28, Rev. W. E. Wheeler, of Pleasant Hill, assisting Rev. H. E. Partridge, his pastor, in the service".
