John Alexander Walker, a long time resident of Shreveport passed away at his home on Sunday, October 4, 2009. A graveside service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 7th, at Forest Park Cemetery with Father James McLelland officiating. His grandchildren and brother-in-law, William Paul Slattery will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Walker was born in Fort Madison, Iowa on February 20, 1908, and grew up in Beaumont, TX. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1930 with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He was a member of ATO fraternity, the Texas Cowboys and the managing editor of the Longhorn Ranger magazine. For many years, he was a member of Walker & Walker architectural firm with his brother, Marshall and son, Joe that provided architectural services for commercial, public, military, religious, educational and residential projects in Shreveport and the surrounding area. The firm also served Mr. A. J. Hodges for many years in the design and development of projects in Hodges Gardens. He was past president of the Shreveport Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and a member of the Louisiana Architects Association. He served for four years on active duty in World War II with the US Navy Civil Engineers on the construction of a dry dock and supply depot in New York Harbor designed to send critical supplies to England during the Battle of Britain. He then served with the Navy Seabees building advanced bases on the New Hebrides and Solomon Islands of the South Pacific and on Okinawa. He received a presidential citation form the Secretary of the Navy and was a retired Commander in the U.S. Navy civil Engineer Corps reserves. John Walker was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Slattery Walker; his mother, Vallie Heisey Walker; his father, Marshall Timmons Walker; sister, Virginia Dare Walker; and brother, Marshall Heisey Walker. He is survived by his son, Dr. John A. Walker, Jr. and wife, Neetsy Billet Walker of Hammond; son, Joseph Marshall Walker and wife, Brookie Hudson Walker of Shreveport; daughter, Frances Ellen Walker and husband, John Francis Beekman of Kingwood, TX; son, James Slattery Walker of Terlingua, TX; grandchildren, Sarah Walker Garrett and husband, Wes; Margot Vales Walker, Peter Slattery Walker, John Brooks Walker and William James Walker; and nieces, Sister Mary Joan of Cantonville, MD and Virginia Walker of Shreveport. Memorials may be made to the Slattery Library at Loyola College Prep., 920 Jordan Street, Shreveport, LA 71101 or the charity of the donor's choice. The family wishes to gratefully thank Mrs. Cleola Johnson, Anne Phills and Emogene Carr for their constant devotion, loving care and comfort they provided for Mr. Walker.
