He was the brother of Billy the Kid. He claimed to have been born in Indiana, but the evidence shows he was born in New York instead. He accompanied his mother and brother, Henry, to Wichita, Kansas in 1870. By 1873 they had moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where his mother married William Antrim. They moved to Silver City, New Mexico by 1874 where his mother died. Joe became a drifter and was reported to be a cook in an Albuquerque hotel in 1883, and a bartender in El Paso before wandering to Denver where he died. No one claimed his body so it was given to the Colorado Medical School.
