Max voluntarilly enlisted into the US Army and was listed as a baker upon his enlistment to Grants Army of the Republic on March 16, 1864 at New York City, New York.
He was transferred to Company I of the 58th Regiment of New York Volunteers Infantry on June 30, 1865 and was honorably mustered out with his company as a private October 1, 1865 at 25 yrs of age.
Max then worked as a coachman for a wealthy New York family and met Catherine Kenneally, a maid or indentured servant of the same family that Max worked for. He married Catherine in Queens, New York in 1869.
Max was a cigar maker (1880) and it is known that he suffered from a stomach ailment for many years. He died in Chicago, Illinois in 1887 at 48 yrs of age and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Evanston, Illinois with his son, Joseph, in a single grave.
