He was the brother of Nate Champion and was the last man to die in the Johnson County War. He was killed by Mike Shonsey near the Horseshoe Bar Ranch near Lusk, Wyoming. Shonsey's friends claim it was self-defense and Dud's friends claim it was murder. Bill Oneal's version in his book, "The Johnson County War" would seem to agree with Shonsey's version.
