James Foulis, Sr., worked as a foreman in the clubmaking shop of the legendary Old Tom Morris – which was located across the street from The Old Course at St. Andrews.

He is the father of James Foulis Jr. who won the U.S. Open golf championship in 1896.

James Foulis Sr. was married to Helen Foulis. He was born in 1841 and died in 1925. Helen was born in 1847 and she passed away in 1928, just a month before her son James Jr. In addition to their five sons, they had two daughters, Annie, who was born in 1876 and died in 1963 and little Maggie who died in 1885 at age 4.
