She was the daughter of Mary Gertrude Newell (1869-1949) and Frederick Clement Aldrich (1862-1948), a grain trader and director at the Chicago Board of Trade. She had a sister named Helen (1896-1987) who married Albert B. Dick, Jr.. The Aldrich's lived at 725 N. Sheridan Rd., Lake Forest.

The 1900 Shields Twp Census shows Helen (age 5) and Anita (age 7) as children of F.C. and Gertrude Aldrich. He is listed as a broker, age 37, born Sep 1863 in Illinois, who has been married ten years to Gertrude, age 31, born Jan 1869 in Illinois. They have a Norwegian maid named Anna Swenier and a 45 year old cook named Mary Finch.

Gertrude Newell was the daughter of Mary Olivia Jones (1843-1927) and Octavius Samuel Newell (1837 Detroit)-1900 Kenosha. The Newell's lived just north of their daughter at 750 N. Sheridan Road. Octavius Newell was a clerk to General Grant's quartermaster in the Civil War, returned to Chicago to work in his father's lumber business after the war, made a fortune, and also served as Mayor of Kenosha. His wife, Mary Olivia, was the daughter of Mary Gould Harris and Daniel Amasa Jones, who are buried at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
