David John Philip Markey was born and lived in Frederick, Maryland. He was of German descent on both his mother's and father's sides. While still in his twenties, he perceived the need for a planing mill to produce window sashing, doors and moulding in the city. Trained as a carpenter and familiar with lumber milling which was the business of his mother's family, he partnered with John Hanshew to build and operate a highly successful planing mill at the northeast corner of North Bentz and West Second Street. The firm also acted as a building contractor with projects ranging from housing to the parsonage of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Frederick where Markey also served terms as elder and alderman. He was a prominent citizen of the community, co-founder and board member of the Mutual Insurance Company of Frederick and city councilman, alderman and Tax Commissioner.

During the Civil War, he did not serve in the military but actively supported the Union cause in this border state of divided loyalties and chaired at least one public event supporting the abolition of slavery in the revision of the Maryland Constitution.

His marriage of over 52 years to Susan Bentz produced eight children, including Frederick merchant John Hanshew Markey. In addition to the children linked below, David and Susan Markey had Henry Scholl Markey, known as Harry, born March 8, 1839 and married to Isabel Littig Shaffer in 1872, who moved to San Francisco in 1879 with his family, including four children, His grave has not been found.

The home David J. Markey built near the mill c. 1839 at the southeast corner of North Bentz and West Third Street still exists in the Historic District of the City of Frederick.
