Ruth Van Nice; assisted civic organizations
A memorial service will be held Wednesday for Ruth Swift Van Nice, 82, who was involved in numerous civic activities.
Mrs. Van Nice, who lived on the Near North Side, died Saturday in Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
She was the former president of the Woman's Board of Passavant Memorial Hospital and was a member of the governing boards of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Art Institute.
She also was active with Vassar College alumnae groups and with the Alliance Francaise, an organization that promotes French culture and language.
Her late husband, Errett Van Nice, a former senior vice president of Harris Trust and Savings Bank, was a former director of the Chicago Convention Bureau and president of Children's Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Van Nice's father, George H. Swift, was a director of the Swift & Co. meatpacking company, which was founded by her grandfather, Gustavus Swift, and headed East Coast operations.
Mrs. Van Nice is survived by a daughter, Ruth Conklin; two sons, Peter and Paul; a sister; and six grandchildren.
The memorial service will be at 3 p.m. in St. Chrysostom's Episcopal Church, 1424 N. Dearborn St
