Philip James Keene was born Philip James Keegan on January 19, 1862 (some accounts place it as 1857) in New York...

Philip James "Keene" (enumerated in the 1900 census as "Joseph Keene") had Irish ancestry, with his father being born in County Leitrim, Ireland and his mother's birthplace is just listed as Ireland.

His own death certificate states that he was 49 and born January 18, 1873, but he had his son (James Philip Keene) with Anna Fox in 1886, an unlikely situation for a 13 yr old.

His death certificate lists his father as "Joseph Keene", but this has been confirmed to have been James Keegan, not Joseph Keene. The informant for the death certificate was my grandfather, Charles Phillip Keene. He obviously did not know the exact truth about his grandparentage....

He worked in the steel industry, as did his father (James Keegan) & brothers, eventually working for American Wire and Steel at the Danbury Plant in Ohio. At some point he suffered a mild stroke and retired.

His sons from his first marriage were also "steel men" working in Allentown & Youngstown, eventually owning Youngstown Boiler and Tank in Ohio. All of them were boilermakers, and that's how Philip James is listed in the Chicago City Directory the year he passes away...

His son from the first marriage (James Philip Keene) gives up steel to move to California in the early 1930's. His son (William Bigby Keene) becomes a judge, and is well known for being the judge in charge of the Charles Manson trial, as well as many other high profile Los Angeles County Superior Court criminal trials of the time (Freeway Stalker, etc.). Judge Keene eventually becomes well known throughout the country for his contributions as the sitting judge on the 1980's program "Divorce Court", where real life divorce trials were heard on TV, the precursor to many of the current "Judge Judy" type shows airing nearly 30 years later.

His first wife was Anna Fox.
His second wife was Gertrude Amelia Joy.
