Donald (Don) Norman Veley, 89, of Mannsville died at his home while surrounded by his family on November 4, 2017. He was the son of Rex and Mina Veley, born October 27, 1928 in Ellisburg, New York.

He attended schools in Ellisburg and Belleville and later joined the United States Coast Guard at the age of 17. Two years later he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII and fought in the South Pacific. He was a member of the VFW.

Mr. Veley established a successful milk hauling business in 1955 and owned a fleet of trucks, retiring in 1993. Upon retirement he later worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier, was employed by the Town of Ellisburg as snowplow operator and was also a truck driver for Thomas Excavating in Adams until he was 80 years old.

Don was a lifetime volunteer member of the Mannsville - Manor Fire Department, serving in various leadership positions including President, Assistant Fire Chief and Chief. His civic engagement also included serving the Village of Mannsville as a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals for 3 years, Village Trustee for 8 ½ years and Mayor for 11 ½ years. He was instrumental in obtaining funding for the village office/library and construction of the current Mannsville-Manor Fire Hall. He also volunteered for several years as a Little League coach.

He enjoyed life to the fullest and had a passion for his family and sports. Don loved to attend professional baseball games and Syracuse University Athletic events.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Lucille Barclay Veley, his son Michael (Kate), of Jamesville, NY; Sheila Kirby (Wayne) of Fulton, NY; Scott (Christina) of Sandy Creek, NY; and a brother Aubrey of Ellisburg. He was predeceased by a brother Lawrence. He is survived by 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Jefferson County Hospice, along with his personal caregivers Carolyn Smithers, Michelle Roberts, Kim Kehoe and Melissa Barrett for all their care and support during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jefferson County Hospice, Mannsville-Manor Fire Department, or South Jefferson Rescue Squad.

Calling hours will be held at the Carpenter Stoodley Inc. Funeral Home, 7883 NY 289, Belleville, New York on Tuesday, November 7th from 5:00 –8:00 pm. Funeral services to be held on Wednesday, November 8th at 11:00 am at the funeral home, followed by burial at Ellisburg Rural Cemetery.
