Faylene C. Adkinson Girdner Barker

Faylene C. Barker, resident of Ponca City, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, in her home. She was 86.

A memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at Grace Memorial Chapel.

Faylene was born July 19, 1921, in Grainola, the daughter of George Adkinson and Jo Pettigrew Adkinson. She was raised in Grainola until the age of 10, at which time the family moved to Ponca City. She attended the Ponca City Schools and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1941.

Faylene married Gerald F. Girdner in Kaw City. In 1951, while residing in Trenton, N.J., the couple adopted twin sons, Donald and Ronald Girdner. Gerald's ill health brought the family back to Ponca City in the late 1950s.

Faylene was a nurse at the Ponca City Hospital for many years and did private duty nursing as well. She went on to work at the Veterans Administration hospital in Big Spring, Texas, until her retirement. She returned to Ponca City in the later 1980s where she resided until her death. Her enjoyments included traveling, fishing and reading.

She is survived by her children, Donald Girdner of Modesto, Calif. and Ronald Girdner of Tonkawa; 11 grandchildren, Donald Girdner Jr. of Modesto, Calif., Keith and Cory Girdner of Midwest City, Gerald, Regina and Linda Kay of Dallas, Texas, Jamie Van of Broken Arrow, Jerrell and Candy Fay of San Antonio, Texas, and Vanessa Ann of Ponca City, Joey Stone of Pawhuska; one great-granddaughter, Cefwyn of Ponca City.

Faylene was preceded in death by her parents, George and Jo Adkinson; her husband, Gerald; her sister, Lorene Hess; and one granddaughter, Stacey Rae.
