Deceased Name: Paul Payne Paul Gardner Payne, 82, of Palm Springs died July 11, 2002, in Idaho.

He was born Dec. 11, 1919, to Chauncey Calvin and Esther Mae Gardner Payne in Malad, Idaho.

He was a manager with Palm Springs Water Company from 1957 to 1968 and the Desert Water Agency from 1968 to 1985. He served on the city planning commission for 10 1/2 years and served as president for two years. He was a charter member of the Riverside County East Planning Commission from 1972 to 1985, past member of the Desert Hospital Operating Board, former member of the American Water Works Association, past board member of the California Water Association and the Southern California Water Utilities. He was an organizer and commanding officer of the air reserve recovery squadron from 1961 to 1963 at the Palm Springs Airport, past president of Toastmasters, United Fund Committees member, Palm Springs Rotary club member and past president of the Riverside County Water Association. He also volunteered for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for 40 years.

He served in the Air Force for 23 years.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Ann of Palm Springs; four daughters, Paula Sorenson of Rexburg, Idaho, Patricia Muir of Caldwell, Idaho, Laura Ainsworth of Rancho Santa Margarita and Lucy Lake of Palm Springs; three sons, Edward of Bountiful, Utah, Kevin of Laguna Nigel and David of Tribuco Canyon; 28 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Palm Springs.

Entombment will be at Palm Springs Mausoleum in Cathedral City with Palm Springs Mortuary of Cathedral City in charge of arrangements.
